Starting With Scarves

I used to see a scarf only as something you put around your neck to keep the cold away. I used to laugh at the ladies and gents wearing the summer scarves and the business women rocking their favorite silk into boardroom meetings.

Then I got bored one afternoon and slid into TJ Maxx. After browsing through a whole rack of affordable summer scarves, I picked a red striped one and pastel Navajo inspired number. They became my go-to neckwear for my low-cut dresses and blouses. Now, it’s quite rare to see me without some form of scarf around my neck, especially at work and especially in the wintertime.

As far as seeing the value in making scarves, I came upon that earlier. I was given a potholder loom by my aunt in 1994 during a trip to the toy store. My mom has won 4-H awards for her outfits and she sewed much of my wardrobe as a child, including my prom dress. She started me on plastic canvas and was also there when I was in that toy store. We took that potholder loom and gave all my aunts on both sides my little creations. Then the loom sat for a few years.

I picked it up again one day in high school, once again, out of boredom. I had some old yarn lying around from Christmas of 1993, which was the year of plastic canvass. I took that yarn and I started cutting my own loops. The idea was to make a nice warm blanket. Yet as I kept making strips and making strips of patches of woven yarn, I saw that maybe scarves were my best bet. However, this was the early 2000’s. People weren’t wearing scarves for kicks, crocheting and crafting was for grandmas and even if people were wearing scarves, they weren’t the ones I saw.

Now we are in the era where young fashionable ladies on national television proudly crochet. Etsy has made handmade accessible and chic. And that’s exactly what I want to extend to you on this site and it’s companion social networks.
